Getting Around the Conference: First Steps

Tools of the Conference

Page Contents:

Zero Emissions Strategies Conference Site on the World Wide Web:

This dedicated World Wide Web site is being developed as the main medium and facilitating device of the conference. The ‘virtual conference hall’ is supported by easy-to-use guidelines for participants, a series of issue papers, discussion groups , and a shared ftp ‘electronic library’, all of which are carefully introduced and located in the conference site map.

The organizational and communications component of the meeting is being handled by Eric Britton and colleagues at EcoPlan and elsewhere. It is anticipated (hoped!) that a number of the participants and colleagues around the world will be chipping in with their suggestions and technical aid. The success of the conference ultimately depends on this kind of selfless team work.

Web Tools, Guidelines and Good Practice Procedures

For help in getting around within the conference site and beyond, you may wish to consult the following sections, perhaps in this order (and at the rsik of repreating step by step the suggestoins set out in the middle columne of the conference's Site Map):

The New Media and Their Uses in This Conference
The Technology Checkout
The Virtual Conference FastTrack: Organization and Uses
Tools for Tyros (Tips for Good Web Practice)
World Wide Web Navigation Aids
Searching the Conference and the World Wide Web
Web Links and Search Results (Examples)
The Electronic Library (and how to use it)
Geeks Corner

Now, that may seem like an awful lot of trouble just to get around in a single conference, but of course if your skills are fully polished none of this will be necessary. And if they are not (yet!), well this may just be a bit of the help you need in the weeks ahead, as well as a wise investment in the future.

Technology Check

A quick first note on equipment and software: Participation in the meeting requires patience and forbearance in proportion to the quality of your hardware, software and experience on the Web. Now that seems unjust, but it is a fact of life, and if we know it in advance we are at least forewarned. A reasonably rapid modem (>28k), a good quality monitor (the old poor pitch, flickering, 256 color screens are just too hard on the eyes), and a bit of familiarity with the later browsers give a terrific advantage. If you have less than that, well, you simply must be patient. We can only hope that the care and quality of the proceedings will be your due reward. (For more on this, kindly go to our pageThe Technology Checkout.)

For Those Needing a Bit More Help

Once again, if you have any doubts about your Web skills, a bit of early consultation will spare you much unnecessary grief. The following three linked sites will get you off to a roaring start at the click of your mouse button. For more help, turn to the full Tools for Tyros (Tips for Good Web Practice) site.
