    Track Moderator Background and Role

The moderator of each tele-conference track is working closely with the organizers to ensure the interest and success of that portion of the overall meeting. In addition to supplying the initial Null Hypothesis which offers the first point of departure for the discussions, moderators are also taking an active role in making the conference known and contacting colleagues and others with strong backgrounds in the areas under discussion from around the world, inviting them to contribute papers and join the discussions over the targeted four week period.

The moderator for managing and organizing contributions to and support of this track of the conference is Eric Britton, Managing Director of EcoPlan International in Paris, France. In the event that you wish to get in touch with him by other than email, his full address details are

    Papers and Contributions

Papers are invited herewith to help focus each of these sessions, with the emphasis in all cases on the search for ways to improve the links between the science and technology potential in these targeted issue areas on the one hand, with the public policy requirements and opportunities on the other. The concept of laying the base for collaborative international projects is still very much to the fore. Each selected paper will be logged into the conference library, accompanied by a brief synopsis and a handful of key words to facilitate rapid reference and selection by participants. In addition to reviewed papers, short presentations and brainstorming pieces are invited and will be posted in poster sessions on the conference site for comment.

    Expert Panel Candidates

One of the important contributions of the moderator is to make their conference track known to a good range of experts and specialists who not only have a lively interest in the topic of the track, but also who may possess some radically different points of view to those set out in the Null Hypothesis. In each case, these colleagues are contacted and invited to join the conference, present papers, and take an active role in the discussions. We are also asking them to inform the meeting of the own work, research projects, Web sites, forthcoming meetings, offers of collaboration, etc.

It is anticipated that it will be these individuals that will be among the primary contributors and driving forces behind the meeting. It is further hoped that some of these people and groups may themselves be engaged in projects or efforts which can benefit from the exposure and processes which out conference is opening up.

The following leading international figures in the telework area are being invited to participate in the panel and to contribute working papers, brainstorming pieces, and to take a hand in the discussions.

We will be pleased to have your nominations for others whom you feel will be helpful in advancing these discussions, including of course not only proponents of telework but also those who may be tacking taking a strongly critical position.

Moderator Strategies and Invisible Colleges – A Commentary

Most of us who have agreed to serve as track moderators are developing small teams of colleagues who are close to us and our topic, and who have in turn indicated that they will be interested to review, comment on and possibly contribute to the debate and the materials as the track develops. Mikoto Usui came up with an expression years ago when we organized a three day brainstorming session on future transport/telecommunications trade-offs at the 11th century Abbaye de Royaumont just north of Paris… those being the old says in which people actually got on planes and traveled to all meetings of this sort. He spoke then of our collaboration over the years as a sort of "invisible college", an expression that perhaps we may wish to bear in mind as we organize our teams of colleagues and associates in this context. -eb

    Early Contributions and Guiding Remarks

Until such time that the moderator has actually begun to log in the substantive materials for the track, visitors may nonetheless wish to take advantage of the Discussion Forum (to the left) in order to share with us their ideas and suggestions, including their eventual written contributions. As appropriate such information and materials will be inserted into the relevant sessions of the track, in addition to finding their rightful place in the discussions.
