Mississippi Honor Roll

Demonstrations, Projects and Programs in Mississippi That Are Trying to Make the Difference

This should eventually be one of the main achievements and instruments of this whole initiative. For the time being, we are going to leave it as an open page, leaving it to others to come in with their candidates and suggestions. Several projects and approaches which we intend to identify here in short order are

1. The LEARN tele-education initiative started by the University of Mississippi, and which is reportedly not being renewed by its state sponsors. This may be an important story to learn from.

2. The project, "Connecting Communities: The Mississippi Family Math and Science Project", that is currently underway via the Mississippi Department of Education, providing Internet access and a context for using the Internet for five rural, low-income Mississippi communities.

3. Business/Entrepreneurship Incubators in Mississippi: A listing of business incubator projects currently underway in Mississippi is attached, along with a basic set of notes and guidelines on their oganization is available HERE. Further background on this potentially promising, but also highly challenging community development approach can be had from the National Business Incubation Association, (740) 593-4331 phone / (740) 593-1996 fax, http://www.nbia.org. We hope in due course to be able to provide realistic and useful background and guides on these concepts, primarily by links to other sites and sources that have had extensive hands-on experience, for better and worse.

Feedback and Views

You are invited to let us know about demonstration, projects or programs that are currently being planned or already underway in various parts of the state. We also are eager to identify older projects, even if they ran into trouble. We think it is very important to learn from these past experiences. Often even when they have run into trouble, they can have a lot to tell us for our next round of attempted innovation. Please share your critical comments and suggestions with us either by email at postmaster@the-commons.org or more directly via Contact Point.
