Applied Research Support

Net-based Meetings
Rural carsharing

12 August 2004: The content here is in process. Check back in a week to see something more complete.

Since we first went on line in 1988 with a broad based internet discussion group and library in support of the various areas of policy and practice that are the continuing concern of The Commons, we have consistently tried to support as best we can research and communications efforts by students, academics and others interested in making sense out of the technology/sustainable development loop. In the specific area of carsharing we and other members of our informal, expanding international consortium of practitioners, experts, policy makers and concerned citizens regularly respond to requests for information and other forms of research support from students and others all over the world.

We have decided that this is a good time for us to set up a more explicit "research corner" of World CarShare, to provide a contact point for past and on-going projects that are trying to make some sense out of carsharing as an integral part of the transportation service portfolio in cities all over the world. To this end, it is our intention to provide here brief summaries of projects in process, along with contact information as appropriate.

Support of surveys

IEEP List of Car Share Schemes
Dawn Haines, Research Officer, of the Institute for European Environmental Policy made contact on 6 July 2004 with the following request: " Currently I am trying to contact as many car share schemes as possible to find out more information about how such schemes market their services, so if anyone out there has a comprehensive list with contact details of the various car share schemes in existence that would be particularly helpful. Alternatively, if you are responsible for co-ordinating a scheme and would be willing to take part in an email questionnaire please let me know."

There has been strong support from the group. Hopefully a full set of results will be posted here shortly. (For more particulars, you can go to the Messages section and search for the name "Dawn", which will callup all letters relating to this.)

E-communications technologies

In addition, we propose to make use of at least one more of the low cost efficient communications technologies which are now available to us all -- in this case working with SUNET (Swedish University Computer Network) who have kindly agreed to share with us their open net-based meeting site, concerning which you will find full particulars here.
