The Next Big Car Free Event

May 1st 2001. Melbourne Car Free Day

Free The City

On May 1st 2001 Melbourne's CBD will be closed to traffic.

Cars destroy our social environments.

Most of our city space is devoted to cars in the form of car parks or bitumen roads. Their noise disrupts our ability to converse. Pollutants from exhausts are a concoction of deadly and in some cases, fatal toxins.

They are the cause of much illness such as asthma and cancer. Exhaust fumes are a major contributor to greenhouse gases which are radically messing with our planet's ecology.

Cities designed around private automotive transport are inefficient and stifle their own economies. Destinations become further away. Our planet cannot sustain the impact private transport systems have on non-renewable resources.

Cars are simply an anti-social, out dated mode of transport.
