Wendy Brawer is an ecological designer with an artist's background. Since 1990, her New York-based company, Modern World Design, has created services and products that promote ecological stewardship, including the Green Apple Map of NYC's environmentally significant places. Under Wendy's direction, this project has grown into the Green Map System, an award-winning local-global collaboration active more than 30 countries (website: www.greenmap.org). With a globally designed visual language of Icons and programs for both city-wide and youth mapmakers, Green Map System was spun off as a separate not-for-profit organization that Wendy continues to direct.

More than 130 locally-led projects are underway from Barcelona to Bangkok to Buenos Aires to Boston, including new editions of NYC's Green Apple Map. Green Map's Honors include EXPO 2000 Project Around the World, United Nations Centre for Human Settlements' Global Best Practices 100 List (1998) and the US National Award for Sustainability in New Communications Tools (1999).

Wendy was the 1997 Designer in Residence at the Smithsonian Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum and winner of 1998's ECO Kudos Award for Connections. In 2001, she will be included among I.D. Magazine's Top Forty Socially Responsible Designer. Wendy has written about, spoken on and taught eco-design extensively. Inspired by renewables, she is the co-winner of Liberty Science Center's 1999 SolarScape competition. She is an active member of the O2 Global Network (US Liaison), a former NY Board member of Architects, Designers and Planners for Social Responsibility and she chaired the Industrial Designers Society of America's Committee on Environmental Concerns in 1993-95. Bicycles are her main mode of transport around NYC, and her household has been car-free since 1985.

Wendy will be generously leading the Green Map Systems contribution to Earth Car Free Day 2001.
