Summary Bio
Chris Hawthorne is a science graduate whose first job was as an oceanographer selecting transoceanic telephone routes. His career path eventually took him into the communications area and he now runs a business with clients involved in various areas of environmental activity from sustainable rural tourism in Tenerife to environmental issues. For the last five years he and his wife Sally have organised Winchester's Festival of Cycling on behalf of Winchester City Council. It is now recognised by the CTC (Cyclists' Touring Club) as one of the top ten events in England. Last year for the first time it was moved to 22 September and held to coincide and support the principles of European Car Free Day. They are presently hard at work organising this year's Winchester Festival of Cycling and a repeat of the city's Alternative Transport Day in support of European Car Free Day. Both events are aimed at raising public awareness of travel issues and encouraging people to think about alternatives. The CFD event will take place in Winchester High Street between 10.30 a.m. and 3.00 p.m. and bring together a wide range of environmentally friendly transport (including gas, electric and dual-fuel vehicles), bus and train companies, environmental groups and local authorities. It will involve closure of a city street to traffic. The Winchester ‘Festival of Cycling’, will be taking place on Saturday 16 – Sunday 24 June 2001 Click here to see the current Winchester On The Move Profile.
