Summary Bio
David Leevers', CEng, MIEE, career has been devoted to developing systems that improve quality of life through immaterialisation. After graduating in physics from Cambridge University 1964, he spent 8 years with GEC Computers leading the team that developed the first European interactive graphics CAD system for printed circuit board design, and a year at Imperial College identifying basic self-organising processes in embryo development and then applied similar algorithms to the organisation of components inside computers. The 1970's were spent on design, consultancy and software management in telecommunications, with work on technology forecasting for new communications services. In 1984 Mr. Leevers joined BICC to lead development of a wide range of communications and video systems. This included demonstrating the concept of a Virtual Meeting Room as a metaphor for multimedia communications services and applying this approach in manufacturing and construction. Currently he is leading two EC projects exploring the potential of networked virtual environments to support distributed collaborative work: CICC, Collaborative Integrated Communications for Construction, and RESOLV, Reconstruction using Laser and Video. In ASSIST he will be demonstrating how the intelligent environments and wearable systems of future Mature Information Society Technologies can turn sustainability from a burden into an opportunity, and he will be contributing to disseminating this vision to policymakers.
