Eric Britton founded EcoPlan in 1966 to provide an independent international forum of study, reflection and counsel on issues involving the management of technology as it effects people in their daily lives. A decade later he created a non-profit international public interest collaborative for these same purposes, The Commons.

Both EcoPlan and The Commons carry out the greater part of their work via the creation and maintenance of international problem-solving networks linking outstanding thinkers, researchers and decision-makers from diverse disciplines, countries and points of view. EcoPlan serves international business and industrial clients, as well as government agencies and international organizations.

Eric's main job in ASSIST is the design and maintenance of this portal. Since the project's topic, the relationship between technology and sustainability, is one that has been central to his life work, he will also try to lend a hand in the review of project deliverables, as well as participating in some of the meetings and workshops. His 1996 group report for the Commission, The Information Society and Sustainable Development, provides an example of his work and thinking on these matters.
